Saints

 The first Sunday of November is set aside to honor the saints that have gone before us to the heavenly home of our God. It is a time to remember how our faith has come to us. To remember those who exemplified the good works God has placed in our hands. Many of us have favorite saints like Francis of Assisi, Brigid of Kildare, Joan of Arc, or Brigette of Sweden. We also honor more recent faithful like Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Day, or the Niebuhr Brothers. Who would be on your list?

We also take time to remember our ancestors. The people who struggled, succeeded, wept, and shouted with joy as they made their way through life. Faith sustained them. Family surrounded them. Their church prayed for them. It is these stories that we recall on this special day. Who would you name as your faithful ancestors?

On November 5 we will honor those who have gone before us. One way we will do this is by inviting people to bring pictures of their favorite saint, faith leader, or family member who helped  you in your faith journey (copies only!). We will make a mural with them so that all can see the kaleidoscope of God's faithful people.

I have shared stories in many settings of my mother and how she shaped how I read scripture ("Can we read the whole chapter?). There have been numerous faith leaders who have given me sage advice that has allowed me to be more present for God. I am sure you have similar stories. Let us honor them all this All Saints Sunday.
